Gordon Hospital Hosts Dinner with Doctors to Discuss Asthma

CALHOUN, GEORGIA, October 21, 2009

Asthma affects more than 22 million Americans and is to blame for approximately 4,000 deaths each year.

However, with proper treatment and by avoiding triggering factors, most children and adults living with this disorder are able to live normal, symptom-free lives, according to Suzette Chin, MD, of Respiratory Consultants of Georgia

“Asthma is a common disorder in which chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes makes them swell, narrowing the airways,” Dr. Chin explained. “This disorder involves only the bronchial tubes and does not affect the air sacs or the lung tissue itself.”

In an effort to educate the public more about asthma, Gordon Hospital is hosting a Dinner with the Doctors event on Thursday, October 29 with Dr. Chin. The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. in the hospital’s Conference Room E. While the dinner is free, registration is required due to space limitations. Please call 706-879-4732 to register. Anyone interested in learning more about asthma is encouraged to attend.

“Airway narrowing in asthma is due to three major processes acting on the bronchi: inflammation, spasm and hyperactivity,” Dr. Chin said. “Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing and wheezing. There are many treatments available today that can help patients live normal lives without these symptoms.”
